If you run a hotel, villa or guest house in Sri Lanka, you probably get most of your bookings through platforms like Booking.com, Agoda and Expedia. They are excellent for being discovered. But every booking through them comes with a commission, often 15% or more, and the guest relationship belongs to the platform, not to you.
A good direct booking website changes that balance. Here is why it matters and what it needs to do.
1. Guests check your website before they book
Many travellers find you on a booking platform, then search your name on Google to learn more. If they find a slow, outdated website, or no website at all, you lose trust at the exact moment they are deciding. If they find a beautiful, fast site with a clear “Book direct” button, many will book with you instead.
2. Every direct booking keeps more money in your business
Even moving a small share of your bookings from platforms to your own website can make a real difference over a season. That saving can pay for the website many times over, and you can share some of it with guests as a direct booking perk: a free airport transfer, breakfast, or a late check-out.
3. You own the guest relationship
When a guest books direct, you have their email and phone number. You can welcome them properly, answer questions on WhatsApp, and invite them back next year. That is how small properties build loyal repeat guests.
What a direct booking website needs
- A booking engine or a simple enquiry flow. Connect your channel manager’s booking engine so rates and availability stay in sync, or start with a clear enquiry form and WhatsApp button.
- Great room pages. One page per room type, with large photos, bed sizes, amenities and views.
- Mobile-first design. Most travellers browse on their phones. Pages must load quickly and the booking button must always be easy to reach.
- Trust signals. Show your Google and TripAdvisor reviews, your location on a map, and real photos of your team.
- A reason to book direct. State your direct booking perk clearly near the booking button.
- Local SEO. Make sure your site appears for searches like “boutique hotel Unawatuna” or “villa near Galle Fort”.
Keep using booking platforms. The goal is not to leave Booking.com or Agoda. They are a valuable source of new guests. The goal is to make your own website the best place to book, so more guests choose it.
Where to start
Look at your website on your phone as if you were a guest. Can you see the rooms, the price and a booking button within a few seconds? If not, that is the first thing to fix.
